Since humans first began making images, the source of creative "talent" has always proved elusive. Why can some people create pictures, stories, or music effortlessly, while others lack such skills? Why can some conceive of things in the abstract while others cannot? In looking for a biomechanical answer, some scientists scientists have gone so far as to attribute creative talent in an individual to an abberant gene in their DNA. But in general, the root cause remains inexplicable.
Master Disney animator Ollie Johnston (1912-2008) explaines: "Good (Disney) animation is not about 'copying real life. Good animation is about caricaturing real life. It is Life-Plus." It's the reason why attempts to create human movement by digitizing complete human skeletons and muscle systems never result in satisfactory movement.
While scientists around him (John Lasseter) wanted to immediately attempt full-on human character animation, Lasseter understood that the results would look stiff and mechanical. It would be Uncanny Walley in spades. That type of CG was good enough to get a rise out of computer geeks at a SIGGRAPH, but it would leave the general public cold. So as computer technology slowly improved, Lasseter devised ways to work around the medium's limitations. Computer animation looks hard and mechanical? So make film about fish, which flout around. It wasn't until The Incredibles (2004) that Pixar fount the right formula for stylization to do credible human characters that kept the verve and energy of traditional animation. Their solution was not to do eerily photo-real humans like those in Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001) but to use the example of the shorthand stylization of humans developped by the Disney animators for films like The Adventures of Ichabod ans Mr. Toaf (1949) and One Hundred and One Dalmations (1961).
CG animation represents a quantum-leap forward in the development of this art form because it offers the possibility for a clear break from traditional reality-rooted styles of animation. Instead of replicating existing worlds, CG offers the chance to create entirely new worlds, an opportunity that few artists have explored to date.

Color Radius
With a specific shader, made by Pierre Fouilloux, everything on a certain radius of the unicorn is in colour, everything else is in black and white with a nice falloff, however its still in testing mode but it does work.

Flamingo Run
What I've done so far:
Characters:
Unicorn Rig+Skin
Flamingo Rig+Skin
Dragon Rig+Skin
Rhino Rig+Skin
Parrot Rig+Skin

I had a problem skinning the Parrot when I made my rig more Advanced than what was necessary, so I changed the rig and had to reskin my Parrot...this is what the rig looked like before:
Environment:
I've done a few trees, a temple, a treehouse, etc...I'm slowly importing them in UDK, gonna meet up with pierre to get the shader to work again, it did some time ago, but stopped when I imported the final skeletal meshs.
This is what it looks like in UDK for now:
